Fundamental Movement Patterns: BrainDance®
(for more information about BrainDance, visit:
www.creativedance.org)
| Breath | Deep, full breathing to oxygenate the brain and body and release anti- stress hormones. Large motor movement encourages this kind of breathing. | |
| Tactile/Sensory | Touching the skin and parts of the body in a safe way. Use a variety of mediums (hands, brushes, fabric, scarves, temperatures, etc.) as well as different efforts (strong, light, sharp and smooth). | |
| Core-Distal | Movements that center around the core center of the body (small) and expand away from the center (large). Opening and closing the body using the breath. | |
| Head-Tail | Bringing the head and tail together (coil) and sending them apart (stretch). Bend, twist and stretch in various directions: up, down, left, right, forward and backward. Combine directions to create diagonal twists in the spine. | |
| Upper-Lower | Grounding (freezing) the lower body while the upper body moves freely. Upper body is expressive with the face, voice, hands and arms. Ground (freeze) the upper body while moving the lower. The lower body is supportive and mobile with strong legs, hips and feet, to balance the upper. Lay down on the floor to create the supportive in the upper and expressive in the lower. | |
| Body Sides | (Ground (freeze) the left side of the body and only move the right side. Ground (freeze) the right side of the body and only move the left side. Bring right elbow and right knee together, then apart and watch your thumbs horizontal for tracking. Open your body like a book, and then close it like a hinge, swinging the right side over to meet the left side. Repeat on both sides. Travel on your belly across the space (crawling). | |
| Cross-lateral | Movements which cross over the midline (from nose to belly button) of the body. Cross arms and legs, then switch with the opposite arm and leg across. Clap hands together at the midline or clap them with right and left hands alternating on top. Create a diagonal connection by bringing right elbow across to meet left knee. Alternate on the other side. Watch your thumb travel vertically (up and down) for eye tracking. Travel on your hands and knees through the space (creeping). Helps to develop the corpus callosum (mediating part of the brain). | |
| Vestibular | Rocking, spinning, turning, bouncing and leaping to mix up the fluid in the inner ear. Hang the head upside down, then right side up. Do these movements for 15-20 seconds continuously. Breathe deeply to avoid or dissipate dizziness. |
